Giovanni Sollima

Giovanni Sollima is a virtuoso cellist. I heard and saw him play today at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. A creative man of importance. He combines a Paganini-like attitude with an enormous range of music knowledge and above all, a sense for musical drama and COMMUNICATION!! With the student orchestra he had so much fun (and they with him!). Fun we had too, almost a decade ago in New York, with Giovanni's band, playing at Merkin Hall (Lincoln Center). The LIVE CD just came out, and is available at the immensely succesfull Cello Biennale Amsterdam, wher e Giovanni is a guest his week. Tomorrow I will write about Richard Rijnvos, who wrote the other premier piece at the concert today
